General Anesthesia – Dentistry – Know the protocol

General Anesthesia is a great way to treat multiple teeth in a painless way in a single session. It has to be done in a hospital setting – We are attached to state of the art Burjeel Hospital in Sharjah. Its 25 mins from Dubai – try to go there between 9am – 4pm so you will be opposite side of traffic.

Protocol – Follow each step

1) PAC – Pre anesthetic Check up.

(You need to visit the Anesthetist at Burjeel Hospital – Before going there call Nursing Supervisor (0565089997) and tell her that you want to come for PAC for dental procedure under Dr Garima and meet the Anesthetist.)

A) Visit Reception and register the patient and take a patient number and contact Nursing supervisor there (0565089997).

Tell them you have come for PAC sent by Dr Garima.

You shall be directed to Anesthesia checking area – you might have to wait for sometime as Anesthetist might be busy with some patients.

B) Anesthetist shall check the child and give approval to go ahead for the procedure. (If the child is having cold , PAC would not be given and we have to cancel the procedure.)

You shall be asked to get the blood test done – do it there and message me once done. You can leave the hospital after blood test.

Once the PAC is done – I shall message you and we can mutually decide the date of the surgery.

C) One day before procedure day covid test needs to be done.

 4) Day of procedure
8 hours before the procedure time no food, milk and water.

Reach 90 mins before the scheduled time.

Paperwork and billing shall be done and you will be alloted a room and child will be
given a change of clothing.

I shall meet you just before the procedure time and take any written consents as needed
and we shall begin the procedure.

Parents are not allowed inside the procedure room.

Immediate Post Treatment
1) As soon as the treatment is finished, child would be awake, a little cranky because of
medicine effects and one parent would be allowed with the child to be in Recovery room for
40 mins – where child would be monitored by the staff.

2) After 40 mins child would be shifted in the room alloted and would be kept there for 2
hours. Food shall be provided and once the child eats something, you will be discharged.

FAQs about the procedure.

1) Any requirement of any medicine before the procedure?
NO, unless there is a swelling in which case antibiotics shall be prescribed by me.

2) Will there be pain or will the child wake up during procedure?
No. Absolutely no. Child is put to sleep with a mask on nose or with medicine through IV line. Once the child is completely sedated, they don’t wake up until procedure is finished and throughout the
procedure CONSTANT MONITORING BY ANESTHETIST IS DONE.

3) Will the child feel pain after waking up from procedure?
No. Because a paracetamol suppository is given and child is hydrated throughout the
procedure through IV line. Discharge medicines if needed are given accordingly.

4) How will be the oral condition of my child?

Any procedure related to gums would take around 10-15 days to heal completely. Child may feel dif erent and may have a feeling of discomfort – but definately no pain – and
will get adjusted to the treatment done within 2 weeks time. Extremely young children may get fever next day after treatment which can be managed by
adol.

5) When can my child resume normal activities?
From next day. He can go to school also.

6) When the child should visit for next follow up?
After 10 days. Then 4 monthly follow ups. I shall follow up until 10-15 days post procedure to enquire about status of the child. As parents, comfort of child and peace of mind about the total information providedputs us at ease and gives a confidence about the procedure being done. I understand that totally and hence feel free to watsapp me about any doubt that pops
up in your mind at any time. I am always happy to help.
